"Many a man claims to have unfailing love, but a faithful man who can find?" So queries Proverb 20:6. Although written thousands of years ago, this indictment of our sinful nature still rings true. How often do we start relationships with such great intentions, but struggle with the follow-through?
Over the past 25 years many of us at The Falls Church have built relationships with our brothers and sisters in Kenya. Various families and individuals have visited the Akiba School and taught there. We've hosted two Kenyans as Falls Church Fellows. Each summer our church sends 20-30 parishioners there to serve on short-term trips. So many of us have had our hearts captured by the joyful people we have met in Kenya.
Over a year ago, a few of those individuals started a "Kenya Vision Team," with the goal of praying for, encouraging and maintaining these cross-continental relationships. This team, along with the TFC leadership, believes that our church-and our friends in Kenya-have a lot to gain from deep, continued relationships. As such, a major part of our team's vision has been to send a couple of TFCers to act as our representatives in Nairobi.
Three young leaders from our church family, Amber Bruce, Dave Chaves, and Anne Stoehr, have answered the call. Each of these "twenty-somethings" has gone through a rigorous application process, including meeting with a small group to help them prayerfully discern God's call. It has been a faith-building experience for all those involved as we've clearly seen God provide just the right people who He will enable to be a blessing in Kenya. God willing, Amber, Dave and Anne-now known as "Kenya Connection" will depart in late September to live and serve in Nairobi for two years.
What will they be doing? Amber will be teaching at the Akiba School, a Christian primary and secondary school in the heart of the Kangame slum. The founder of the school, Edith Gitao, has a longstanding friendship with our church and with Sam and Lynn Owen, TFC Missionaries. Our church congregation currently sponsors the education of 80 Akiba students. Dave and Ann will serve as needed at some of the ministries we have been involved with over the years, including Beacon of Hope, Kibera Card Centre, Light and Power Centre, and others. The three will live simply, on the periphery of the impoverished neighborhoods in which they will be serving. With God's help, they will be bridge builders, opening lines of communication between TFC and our ministry partners in Nairobi.
How can you be involved? Contact Julie Plaxico (jplaxico@thefallschurch.org) to commit to pray or contribute financial support. Consider visiting Dave, Anne, and Amber next summer by going on a TFC Global Engagement Trip. Pray that God would allow them to be an expression of our church's love for our friends in Kenya. Lastly, pray for all of us that have been touched by our time in Kenya-that we would hear God's call on each of our lives and know how to be faithful friends.
- Brad Pantuck (Kenya Vision Team Chairman)
