Historically, Africa has been a continent that receives missionaries rather than sends them. For six centuries, European and American churches have sent evangelists and aid workers to serve in Africa, to offer help and hope in the name of Jesus Christ. Sometimes these efforts were ill conceived, accompanied by imperialism, or otherwise failed to serve the needs of indigenous populations. Nonetheless, the western church has left a vast legacy and imprint on the spiritual and social development of Africa. The modern secularization of the West, however, has led to a paradigm shift in the church. In the light of the changing shape of world Christianity, Africa needs to be prepared to take leadership in global mission and cross cultural service.
Since its inception in 1954, Church Army Africa has trained and deployed nearly 500 evangelists and missionaries for ministry across Africa. Traditionally, these missionaries have not been deployed across cultures or tribal or ethnic barriers. At this stage in world history, Church Army Africa is committed to birth a new mission movement within the Anglican Church, aggressively seeking to fulfill the great commission and extend God’s Kingdom through praying, identifying, training, commissioning, deploying and supporting called, capable men and women to cross cultural barriers in order to transform societies across Africa and beyond; reconciling individuals and communities to God and one another. Two such Kenyan evangelists have been commissioned and sent to Madagascar fully supported by the Kenyan Church. Through Kenya Connection, Dave had the privilege of working to send these two as the first full-time missionaries from the Anglican Church of Kenya serving outside the country. Below is their first ministry report from Madagascar. At Church Army Africa, our goal is to send another 1000 such missionaries in the next 7 years! Africans%20for%20Africa%201.pdf
On September 26th, 2008, Akiba's School Bus was completed. The new bus is a huge boost to the school and will ease commuting for many students. Children as young as eight years old walk long distances to attend class, and the School Bus will help Akiba serve its students more effectively. It will also help Akiba continue to expand as it attracts new students who are not in walking distance. The bus will be used for school field trips and sporting events as well and is a huge blessing to the Akiba community. Thank you to the generous donors who made this possible!
Running a school on less than $3 per student per month is not easy. But that is just normal when ministering to the poorest of the poor in Gatina Slum. Join Pastor Moses as he invites you into his sitting room to join the thirty children who are already there. Brought to you by Light and Power Centre, a story of our neighbors next door and their efforts to uplift the poor.
In June 2008, Amber and Anne returned home to the U.S. after two years of missions service in Kenya. After teaching at Akiba School, working with youth at Light and Power Centre, and serving at Mudzini Kwetu Girl's Home in Mombasa, the two are now adjusting to a different type of life back in the states. Anne is now pursuing an M.B.A. at UNC Chapel while Amber teaches at the Smithsonian Institutes in Washington, D.C. and studies counseling at George Mason University. Both Anne and Amber continue to stay connected with their friends and with missions in Kenya.
The third member of the original Kenya Connection trio, Dave, continues to serve through The Falls Church in Nairobi, Kenya. He now works with Church Army Africa supporting missions throughout the continent. He also continues to serve with The Falls Church's many ministry partners in Kenya, such as Light and Power, Akiba, and Planting Faith.
From the streets of Nairobi to success in secondary school. Listen to the story of Charles as he shares his journey through Light and Power and Akiba School.
Dave's continued work in Kenya means supporting missions throughout East Africa and beyond. Here is the vision of his current involvement with Church Army Africa. It is a vision about transformation, sending and supporting African missionaries to positively transform society across the continent.
Kenya Connection is helping to support a new era of Missions in the Anglican Church of Kenya. Here is a short video about two Kenyans who will be serving in Toliara, Madagascar, one of the poorest regions of the world.
