In Loving Memory

In Loving Memory of Chichi Amina

The first time I met Chichi she was singing.

She was so full of life, joy, and hope. She carried an energy and excitement about her that was life-giving. And when she sang alongside my wife it was beautiful.

Chichi once wrote these words to my wife and I in a letter:

“A lot of things get me excited. Learning new things, meeting new people, traveling (just the ride gets me excited), just to mention but a few. I am passionate about music. Listening to music, singing, anything about music.”

Chichi was part of the worship team in our church. She was also the loudest source of laughter in our home. She was the ringleader of laughter and song – and her laughter was contagious. Chichi was my wife’s little sister. She was our source of entertainment, our friend and fellow missionary and adventurer. She was our live-in “nanny” and the treasurer of our group. She was a part of our home. For such a little lady she was an over-sized source of joy.

My God, do you cry as we do? You protected and provided for Chichi throughout her life. You formed her in her mother’s womb. You cherished her as a child, and carried her through her teenage years. We saw your hand at work in so many ways.

When Chichi was murdered did you not move to intervene? Was your heart filled with anguish as ours are now overwhelmed? When Chichi was stabbed did you remember how your own Son was pierced? Oh God!. . .

Our sister Jacinta Amina Achieng’ we miss you so much!

This was one of Chichi’s favorite songs. She used to sing it as she looked after our son or as she cleaned or sat on her bed. I believe she is singing it again today. She is singing it with a passion that words cannot describe. When I listen closely, I can hear her voice:

“For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.” (Job 19:25)
